This role coordinates and maintains an effective system to register and follow patients with a malignancy diagnosis at a New York State certified cancer center. The Tumor Registrar ensures data accuracy for future cancer program planning and research, adhering to American College of Surgeons (ACOS) and NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) requirements.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a thorough system to identify and incorporate all mandatory cases into the cancer registry, understanding ACOS and NYSDOH inclusion/exclusion criteria.
- Abstract cases with all required data as outlined by ACOS manual and NYS Facility Reporting Manual, utilizing multiple sources for accurate data abstracting.
- Fully understand and assign proper medical diagnosis and stage of cancer, record treatment plans, and assign medical coding according to ICD-O-3 classification system.
- Enter all abstracted data into the Oncology database.
- Use a variety of methods to research and record follow-up of all cancer patients for their lifetime as required by ACOS, resolving delinquent cases.
- Ensure various quality assurance measures by maintaining follow-up rates for all eligible patients and selecting random cases for quality assurance reviews.
- Provide ad-hoc statistical reports to administration and physicians and assist with Quality Improvement studies.
- Attend multidisciplinary Oncology conferences, workshops, training & educational sessions to maintain Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credentials.
Requirements
- 2 years experience in cancer registry or related health information
Qualifications
- Associates degree in Health Information Technology with Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential preferred
- 2 years experience in cancer registry or related health information experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
