About This Role

Deliver quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders, ensuring their safety and well-being. This role plays an integral part in the comprehensive clinical treatment team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care to patients, including facilitating social and emotional needs, supervising medication schedules, and evaluating patient progress
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary professionals to determine and provide optimal patient care
  • Maintain a safe environment on the unit
  • Provide social support for patients by encouraging participation in support groups, social activities, and therapeutic measures
  • Conduct intake assessments through interviews with patients and relatives to gather case history
  • Plan and provide nursing care for patients
  • Make nursing diagnoses of medical and emotional status of patients and recommend treatment options
  • Consult with psychiatrists and other behavioral health staff in designing appropriate treatment plans
  • Administer and note reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications
  • Arrange further medical attention when necessary
  • Assist clients in understanding emotional disturbances and accepting treatment
  • Keep accurate written charts and records of patient activities and progress, complying with laws and regulations
  • Use professional judgment to apply appropriate intervention techniques with patients in crisis
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff and patients
  • Test for vital signs of pain and ensure treatment of pain
  • Document all patient information on medical charts and follow physician's written orders
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of patient treatments, immunizations, and laboratory results
  • Perform administrative assignments such as filing, answering phones, typing, and completing progress notes

Requirements

  • 2+ years clinical experience (preferably behavioral healthcare, phone triage, or tele-health)
  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Knowledgeable of patient rights and mental health laws/regulations
  • Advanced knowledge and clinical skills in diagnosis and treatment of mental health
  • Sound leadership skills
  • Basic knowledge of treatment procedures and crisis intervention practice
  • Basic knowledge of abnormal psychology in psychiatric populations
  • Thorough familiarity of psychopharmacy and psychotropic medications
  • Ability to apply professional nursing care principles
  • Effective communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to exercise appropriate judgment
  • Successfully pass background check, drug screen, physical, and provide positive employment references

Qualifications

  • ADN or BSN from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience, preferably in a behavioral healthcare setting, phone triage, tele-health or a combination of education and experience
