Produce Assistant

About This Role

Assist the Produce Manager in the successful operation and profitability of the produce department, focusing on customer service, inventory management, and maintaining a high-quality display.

Responsibilities

• Provide world-class customer service
• Create an inviting, full, and shopable produce department
• Assist in ordering for the department and maintaining accurate inventory levels
• Manage margin, cost of goods sold (COGs), and overall department profitability by minimizing shrink and maximizing effective purchasing
• Set and maintain the department daily, ensuring produce racks are consistently fresh and abundant
• Cull, crisp, rotate, and properly handle/store produce
• Ensure only certified organic produce is ordered and received
• Ensure all in-stock products/conditions meet company standards
• Clean all tools and equipment in accordance with health department and company standards
• Receive all incoming produce orders per company standards
• Offer and follow up on special orders
• Assist in training and monitoring department personnel
• Conduct active and passive demos
• Work with the department manager to address performance issues within the department
• Handle register functions including backup cashiering, managing customer returns, addressing customer complaints, and covering register shift changes
• Maintain the safety and security of customers and employees
• Answer customer questions per company standards and policies
• Continually increase product knowledge
• Utilize email and IS programs as needed
• Complete DSR and closing cash processes if required
• Work a schedule based on store needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays (five days, 40 hours per week)
• Attend mandatory store meetings

Requirements

• Ability to pass food safety training courses and/or certifications
• Ability to manage changing priorities and stay focused
• Sense of urgency in completing tasks
• Excellent customer service skills
• Highly organized with great attention to detail
• Ability to take direction and follow through
• Cashier trained and able to count currency
• Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Outlook

Qualifications

• High School diploma, GED or equivalent preferred
• 1 year of experience in grocery, retail or produce environment preferred; 1 year of experience supervising others preferred
