About This Role

The Police Officer I provides essential law enforcement and public safety services to the community, enforcing state and local laws, investigating crimes and crashes, and preventing crime. This role demands independent judgment and superior decision-making skills.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce federal, state, and local laws, including traffic ordinances
  • Investigate crimes following established practices, including crime scene documentation, evidence collection (DNA, fingerprints), and accurate report writing
  • Educate the public on City codes, ordinances, and state statutes
  • Conduct preventive and proactive patrols by vehicle, bicycle, and on foot to protect lives and property
  • Investigate vehicular crashes, direct traffic, coordinate vehicle removal, and dispatch medical personnel
  • Administer first aid and emergency medical care until professional medical personnel arrive
  • Assist in investigations of missing persons, civil matters, and noise disturbances
  • Retrieve pertinent information from emergency/non-emergency calls and communicate it effectively via radio
  • Maintain proper care and use of assigned patrol vehicle, department equipment, and weaponry
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives and programs
  • Perform non-criminal public safety services
  • Maintain current knowledge of operations, laws, statutes, and ordinances through continuous review and training

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and understand English with proper spelling and grammar
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
  • Aptitude for operating department equipment and tools
  • Ability to use safe work practices and appropriate safety gear
  • Ability to work in stressful emergency environments and intense life-threatening conditions
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively communicate with co-workers, city employees, and the public
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to provide credible court testimony
  • Must successfully obtain and retain certification as a Kansas Law Enforcement Officer
  • Must successfully complete a Leawood Police Department Officer Training Program
  • Must maintain an acceptable discipline, accident, and safety record
  • Completion of NIMS IS100 and IS700 within 90 days of hire
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
