The Police Officer plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA properties by serving and protecting Veterans, patients, employees, and visitors. This position provides security and assistance while enforcing laws and regulations within various jurisdictional environments.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a Police Officer ensuring a safe and secure environment across all VA administrations and properties
- Provide security and assistance to Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, and visitors
- Empathize, engage, and communicate with all individuals encountered to ensure positive outcomes and facility safety
- Provide policing services in various jurisdictional environments, understanding and applying correct laws, regulations, and processes
- Perform duties requiring considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, climbing stairs, and carrying items over 50 pounds
Requirements
- Successful completion of an 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center
- Ability to qualify for and be issued a firearm, and semi-annually qualify with assigned firearm
- Annually qualify with an expandable Straight Baton (MEB)
- Maintain a valid State or Commonwealth Driver's License
- Good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear conversational voice
- Emotional and mental stability
- Capacity to perform essential functions without risk to self or others
Qualifications
- bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program related to the work
- One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service) or a bachelor's degree in Police Science or a comparable degree program. Specialized experience includes work on a police force, military police officer service, visitor protection and law enforcement, or criminal investigative duties.
