About This Role

The Transportation Assistant provides administrative and technical support for Beneficiary Travel operations at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, including program planning and special projects. This role ensures compliance with regulations, coordinates veteran transportation needs, and manages the center's Beneficiary Travel program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide program administrative and technical assistance in day-to-day Beneficiary Travel operations
  • Perform program planning and complete special projects as assigned
  • Ensure Beneficiary Travel, Special Mode Transportation, fraud prevention, patient funds, and ambulance billing programs comply with regulations
  • Coordinate Veterans transportation needs with clinical staff, healthcare professionals, and Community Care providers
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, manage, and evaluate clinical applications of patient transportation for improving care, safety, and cost-effectiveness
  • Decide on common carrier or special mode transportation based on physician documentation and traveler's medical condition
  • Accept inbound Beneficiary Travel calls from Veterans and staff, responding to questions or problems related to reimbursement benefits
  • Manage the Medical Center's Beneficiary Travel program using eligibility criteria and regulatory authorities
  • Determine eligibility for government-sponsored travel using applicable federal regulations and policies
  • Manage fund control points for mileage reimbursements

Requirements

  • Ability to collect, compile, track, and analyze data and statistical information in support of transportation
  • Experience contacting customers to determine transportation needs and requirements
  • Experience managing schedules for daily activities
  • Proficiency in entering information into an automated tracking system
  • Ability to communicate and treat customers in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner
  • Must meet Time-In-Grade requirements if current Federal employee (52 weeks at GS-4 for GS-5, GS-5 for GS-6, GS-6 for GS-7)

Qualifications

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade or 4 years education above high school for GS-5 only.
