About This Role

Serve as a Medical Support Assistant within the Mental Health Service Line at the Coralville VA Clinic, performing duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information while interfacing with various computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties related to the receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information
  • Interface with personal computer (PC) applications, Vista, and other VA applications
  • Schedule, cancel, and re-schedule patient appointments and consults
  • Enter no-show information and monitor the electronic wait list
  • Prepare for clinic visits and monitor inpatient and outpatient appointments
  • Ensure encounter forms are completed for appropriate workload credit
  • Verify and update demographics and insurance information
  • Process emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals
  • Perform basic eligibility, co-pays, and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage
  • Answer phones, greet patients, and relay messages

Requirements

  • Citizen of the United States
  • Proficient in spoken and written English
  • Ability to meet, communicate, and interact with individuals courteously
  • Ability to utilize computer systems to enter administrative data in patient systems
  • Ability to learn and utilize basic medical terminology

Qualifications

  • One year above high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six months of experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work, or one year above high school education for GS-3 entry-level.
