The Optometric Technician works directly with doctors to provide comprehensive patient care, including pre-testing, post-exam duties, and specialty testing, while maintaining appointment schedules to ensure a professional and pleasant patient experience.
Responsibilities
- Perform preliminary evaluation of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, including dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, and Optomap
- Conduct verbal interviews with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit, communicating findings to the Optometrist
- Enter patient information accurately into Electronic Health Records (EEHR)
- Assist Optometrists in providing timely and effective patient care, adhering closely to the appointment schedule
- Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor’s treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments
- Discuss Lasik options with patients and identify those interested by reviewing patient information forms
- Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and other specialists, completing necessary paperwork
- Record and maintain patient records in compliance with company, federal, and state HIPAA policies
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, and problems, referring to the Optometrist as needed
- Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection
Requirements
- High School or GED qualification
- Entry level PC skills including MC Office, Windows, and Word Processing
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively and professionally collaborate with co-workers and patients
Qualifications
- High School or GED qualification
Nice to Have
- Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications
- Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment
- Experience maintaining patient records and files per HIPAA regulations
- Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT)
