This Optometric Technician role involves working with optometrists to provide comprehensive patient care, including pre-testing, post-exam duties, and specialty testing. The position focuses on ensuring a professional and pleasant patient experience while maintaining appointment schedules.
Responsibilities
- Perform preliminary patient evaluations, such as dilation, topicals, and Optomap, prior to the optometrist's exam
- Conduct verbal interviews to determine medical issues and reasons for patient visits
- Enter patient information into Electronic Health Records (EEHR)
- Assist optometrists in providing timely and effective patient care
- Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor's treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments
- Discuss LASIK with patients and identify those interested by reviewing patient information forms
- Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and other specialists, completing appropriate paperwork
- Record and maintain patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication and treatment, referring to the optometrist as needed
- Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection
- Perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, etc.)
- Support the optometrist with patient education
- Document medical findings and communication in Electronic Medical Records
- Participate in practice meetings and projects
- Ensure maximum optometrist utilization through pre-appointment and daily confirmations, and patient outreach
- Call no-show or canceled patients to reschedule appointments
- Perform contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manage contact lens trial inventory
- Perform end-of-day responsibilities, including opti-schedule wrap-up and checklists
- Make recommendations for efficiency and process improvements
Requirements
- High School or GED qualification
- Entry level PC skills including MS Office, Windows, and Word Processing
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Nice to Have
- Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications
- Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment
- Experience maintaining patients’ records/files per HIPAA regulations
- Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT)
