About This Role

An Optometric Technician performs patient care activities, pre-testing, post-exam duties, and specialty testing to ensure a professional and pleasant patient experience, working closely with the doctors to maintain their schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluation of patients prior to exam by the OD, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap
  • Conduct verbal interviews with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit, communicating findings to the OD
  • Enter patient information into Electronic Health Records (EHR)
  • Assist Optometrists (ODs) in caring for patients efficiently and according to schedule
  • Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor's treatment plan and schedule follow-up appointments
  • Discuss Lasik with patients and identify those interested by reviewing patient information forms
  • Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and other specialists, completing appropriate paperwork
  • Record and maintain patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication and treatment, referring to the OD as necessary
  • Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection

Requirements

  • High School or GED qualification
  • Entry level PC skills including MS Office, Windows, and Word Processing
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with co-workers and patients

Qualifications

  • High School or GED qualification

Nice to Have

  • Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment
  • Experience maintaining patient records per HIPAA regulations
  • Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT)
