About This Role

This role involves assisting optometrists with patient care, pre-testing, and post-exam duties. It ensures a professional and pleasant patient experience by managing schedules and performing diagnostic tests.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preliminary evaluation of patients prior to exam by the OD, including dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap
  • Conduct verbal interviews with patients to determine medical issues and reasons for visit
  • Enter patient information into Electronic Health Records (EEHR)
  • Assist ODs in caring for patients in a timely, effective manner
  • Instruct patients on medical care as prescribed by the doctor’s treatment plan and schedule follow up appointments
  • Discuss LASIK with patients and identify interested candidates
  • Schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists and other specialists, and complete appropriate paperwork
  • Record and maintain patient records/files in compliance with HIPAA
  • Respond to patient’s telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, and problems, referring to the OD as necessary
  • Complete proper coding of procedures for payment collection
  • Perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera)
  • Corresponds with doctor offices regarding patient and insurance referrals

Requirements

  • High School or GED qualification
  • Entry level PC skills including MS Office, Windows, and Word Processing
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications

  • High School or GED qualification

Nice to Have

  • Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment
  • Experience maintaining patients’ records/files per HIPAA regulations
  • Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT)
