Engineer Landfill

About This Role

This role requires an experienced engineer in the environmental and solid waste industry to manage technical projects, oversee engineering and construction at disposal facilities, and mentor junior staff. The position involves engaging with consulting firms, regulators, and contributing to capital budgets and capacity tracking.

Responsibilities

• Engage, direct, and manage professional consulting firms for work tasks at solid waste facilities (e.g., permit applications, construction plans, site monitoring, regulatory submittals)
• Maintain strong working relationship with regulators and act as a direct line of communication on technical and permitting matters, representing WM in meetings and inspections
• Manage landfill construction projects from plan preparation to final approval, including consultants, contractors, budgets, bid documents, and contract administration
• Actively manage and track capital budgets for engineering and construction projects, reporting to local management and corporate using Company procedures
• Coordinate landfill capacity tracking, including developing airspace calculations, completing capacity projections and efficient fill sequencing plans
• Continuously evaluate sites for adherence to construction and permit documents, and for site expansion potential through regular site visits
• Collaborate with other professionals and subject matter experts within WM to provide innovative, cost-effective engineering solutions
• Participate in review of acquisitions and coordination/evaluation of divestitures, including proforma modeling assistance and interaction with corporate and executive management
• Assist in training and provide mentorship and supervision of WM technical staff assigned to your team

Requirements

• Bachelors Degree in Engineering
• 7+ years of experience in the environmental and solid waste industry
• Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations, including solid waste, air, storm water and wastewater
• In-depth knowledge of landfill design and permitting
• Strong project management skills
• Ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment
• Ability to lead environmental, engineering, and multi-disciplinary teams
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and regulations
• Working knowledge of safety regulations
• Understanding of accounting processes and P&L statements

Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree in Engineering
• Seven (7) years of experience in the environmental and solid waste industry
