This role supports patients in an emergency medical setting by performing direct patient care functions within their scope of practice under the supervision of licensed personnel. Responsibilities include providing patient care, data collection, assisting with patient positioning and daily activities, and maintaining medical equipment and supplies.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care within the scope of practice as directed by providers and licensed staff
- Perform patient care tasks including sterile and non-sterile soaks, dressings, perineal care, ostomy care, nasal cannula, phlebotomy, EKGs, and incentive spirometry
- Insert and remove straight catheters and remove Foley catheters after appropriate training and validation
- Collect patient data including vital signs, oxygen saturation, temperature, cardiac monitoring, and fluid intake/outtake
- Perform point-of-care testing as delegated by an RN and report lab values
- Assist with positioning patients, applying orthopedic splints, casts, and dressings
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, positioning, and ambulation
- Assist with fall prevention and patient restraints as delegated
- Transport patients from helipad or ambulance bay, or to diagnostic studies and floor assignments
- Provide and document comfort and non-pharmacological pain management measures
- Document data on medical records, inform RN of activities, observations, and changes in patient status
- Assist with resuscitation / CPR and emergency airway procedures
- Maintain appropriate medical equipment and supplies and return equipment to other units
- Decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and supplies with approved cleaners
- Clean and stock carts, rooms, and change linen
- Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and serve as a role model
- Complete annual and as-needed compliance training and professional development
Requirements
- Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman, or nursing fundamentals course OR 1 year of related experience
Qualifications
- Completion of a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, surgical tech, phlebotomy, military medical corpsman, or nursing fundamentals course, or 1 year of related experience in lieu of education
- No experience required; experience in a related field preferred
Nice to Have
- Experience as a nursing assistant, patient care tech, medical assistant, EMT, Paramedic, Surgical Tech, Phlebotomist, Medical Corpsman, or nursing student
- Licensure, certification, or registration in the field of training
