Deputy Director of Structural Engineering

About This Role

Lead and manage a structural engineering unit for NYC Parks, overseeing the design and execution of projects for public spaces, historic structures, and waterfront areas. This role significantly impacts neighborhood development, public health, and sustainability initiatives across New York City.

Responsibilities

• Manage engineering staff by assigning projects, monitoring workloads, team and project progress, schedule, and performance
• Perform technical review of work, monitor and evaluate employees' performance, attendance, and approve timesheets and leave requests
• Direct and manage workload associated with structural engineering within Parks' purview
• Ensure projects are designed and executed according to best practices and properly filed with relevant authorities
• Ensure timely completion of design projects and transmittal of bid documents
• Facilitate rapid problem-solving on issues during construction or conditions posing public danger
• Coordinate project-specific intra- and inter-agency projects, including design coordination, stakeholder input, permits, and approvals
• Serve as agency-wide point person for technical consultation within the appropriate engineering field
• Serve as Engineering Department liaison and attend meetings with architects, landscape architects, consultants, contractors, stakeholders, and representatives of other agencies

Requirements

• Valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer
• Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work
• Two (2) years of experience in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity
• Current permanent City employee serving in the Administrative Engineer civil service title or on leave, or permanent City employee in/on leave from a comparable title with a valid New York State Professional Engineer License

Qualifications

• Six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in engineering, at least two (2) years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity. At least 5 years of experience with both technical design and project management duties preferred.

Nice to Have

• Specialty in Structural Engineering
• Thorough understanding of NYC Department of Building codes/regulations
• 5+ years of experience with both technical design and project management duties
• Knowledge in waterfront structures and sustainable/“green” design
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite and relevant structural design software
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
