This role is for a skilled welder responsible for fabricating, repairing, modifying, rebuilding, and assembling various types of commercial fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, metal, and alloy parts for Montgomery County's Department of General Services, Fleet Management Services.
Responsibilities
- Identify work, plan layouts, select materials, and apply effective welding techniques for various metals and alloys
- Perform mechanical maintenance on equipment such as sanders, plows, and buses, including disassembling parts for welding jobs
- Devise special jigs and fixtures, use preheating/stress relieving techniques, and perform incidental duties like brazing, soldering, and grinding
- Customize and fabricate modifications for heavy equipment and public safety vehicles, and assemble/install replacement parts
- Maintain tools and equipment in good operating order and ensure a clean work area
- Order and maintain stock of welding supplies, and may modify frames and other vehicle body parts
- Work in machine shop, use machine tools, and rebuild or fabricate parts as needed for repair work
- Maintain records and create reports of work accomplished and materials used, utilizing the FASTER database
- May help train apprentices or other employees in welding skills
Requirements
- Completion of a recognized apprentice welder program
- Ability to frequently lift, carry or otherwise move objects that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally to move objects that weigh up to 100 pounds
- Valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license at time of employment application
- Valid Class "A" or valid "B" (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement or valid Instructional Permit for Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License at first day of county employment
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Completion of a recognized apprentice welder program.
Nice to Have
- Experience in heavy equipment and/or transit welding, repair and maintenance
- Experience taking precise measurements for fabrications
- Certification in vertical and overhead welding
- Experience in Mig and Tig welding
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and service inspections on transit buses and heavy trucks and equipment
- Experience working on electric vehicles
- Experience working on alternative fuel vehicles
