The Unit Secretary facilitates safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care by performing clerical and receptionist duties in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). This role involves computer order entry, data retrieval, maintaining unit supplies, and acting as the central communication source on the nursing unit.
Responsibilities
- Perform clerical and receptionist functions including computer order entry and retrieval of data
- Maintain unit supplies and transport supplies, equipment, and patient medications
- Prepare and maintain patient charts
- Provide customer service and act as the central communication source on the nursing unit
- Answer telephone calls and patient call lights, communicating patient needs to the healthcare team
- Facilitate patient admission, transfer, and discharge
- Track bed activity and notify housekeeping of patient discharge
- Place physician and ancillary consults
- Maintain computer and other related IT equipment, reporting malfunctions
- Ensure a safe environment for unit operations and comply with infection control policies
Requirements
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate with other health care providers
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations
- Strong detail orientation
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to enter information into an electronic medical record
- Basic medical terminology
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Less than 1 year clinical experience in acute care setting preferred
