About This Role

The Surgical Technologist 2 aids the surgical team in ensuring a safe and efficient operating room by preparing instruments, maintaining equipment, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss special needs with the surgeon pre-surgery and prepare instruments
  • Aseptically clean and prepare the operative site
  • Prepare and maintain the instrument table to avoid damage and incorrect instrument counts
  • Identify and rectify discrepancies in damaged or incomplete trays
  • Set up the operating room, arranging sterile instrument table supplies and equipment for specific procedures
  • Ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies
  • Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, passing sterile supplies and equipment
  • Assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient
  • Receive and verify surgical specimens following protocol
  • Assist with placement of surgical dressings post-surgery
  • Disassemble surgical instruments, recycle as needed, and dispose of waste properly
  • Prepare soiled instrumentation for transportation to the decontamination area
  • Ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments
  • Clean the operating room after each case and return equipment to storage
  • Follow infection control policies, AORN Guidelines, and OSHA regulations
  • Ensure proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation before patient use
  • Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies

Requirements

  • Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards
  • Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies
  • Successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program AND holds CST certification (NBSTSA or NCCT)
  • OR completed a formal surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or Public Health Service Commissioner
  • OR was employed to practice surgical technology in a healthcare facility before September 1, 2009

Qualifications

  • Grad of an Accredited Program
  • Less than 1 Year of Experience
