The Surgical Technologist 2 aids the surgical team in ensuring a safe and efficient operating room by preparing instruments, maintaining equipment, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon and staff.
Responsibilities
- Discuss special needs with the surgeon pre-surgery and prepare instruments
- Aseptically clean and prepare the operative site
- Prepare and maintain the instrument table to avoid damage and incorrect instrument counts
- Identify and rectify discrepancies in damaged or incomplete trays
- Set up the operating room, arranging sterile instrument table supplies and equipment for specific procedures
- Ensure proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies
- Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, passing sterile supplies and equipment
- Assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient
- Receive and verify surgical specimens following protocol
- Assist with placement of surgical dressings post-surgery
- Disassemble surgical instruments, recycle as needed, and dispose of waste properly
- Prepare soiled instrumentation for transportation to the decontamination area
- Ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments
- Clean the operating room after each case and return equipment to storage
- Follow infection control policies, AORN Guidelines, and OSHA regulations
- Ensure proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation before patient use
- Maintain inventory of clean and sterilized surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies
Requirements
- Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards
- Knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique
- Knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies
- Successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited or other nationally accredited surgical technologist program AND holds CST certification (NBSTSA or NCCT)
- OR completed a formal surgical technology training program in the U.S. military or Public Health Service Commissioner
- OR was employed to practice surgical technology in a healthcare facility before September 1, 2009
Qualifications
- Grad of an Accredited Program
- Less than 1 Year of Experience
