Surgical Tech

About This Role

This Surgical Technologist I role facilitates invasive surgical procedures under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse. The position ensures a safe operating room environment, proper equipment function, and maximum patient safety through sterile and aseptic techniques.

Responsibilities

• Perform technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, employing proper technical practices
• Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation
• Follow aseptic technique, identify contamination, and implement corrective actions
• Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies
• Label drugs and solutions, and monitor quantities used
• Assist in proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens
• Actively participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes
• Assist the surgeon, demonstrating understanding of patient's anatomy and abnormalities
• Assist in picking cases and planning of instrument needs
• Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information and communicate with the surgical team
• Operate complex equipment and resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary
• Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and a preceptor as needed

Requirements

• Successful completion of service specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
• Strong communication skills/customer service relations
• Excellent organizational/priority setting skills

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech
• 0-3 years professional experience
