Staff Operations Engineer

About This Role

Serve as a tech lead for the data engineering team, focusing on maintaining, growing, and improving Mailchimp's database infrastructure and instrumentation, primarily covering MySQL, Spanner, CloudSQL and RDS.

Responsibilities

• Manage and monitor Mailchimp’s Database Infrastructure in colocation facilities and the cloud (AWS, GCP)
• Work cross functionally with Intuit teams to provide guidance on data storage best practices
• Collaborate with product developers to improve database performance and resiliency
• Support the migration of databases from colocation facilities to the cloud
• Provide support for large scale database instances across production, non-production, and development environments
• Perform regular upgrades and patches to address security vulnerabilities
• Support and improve database availability and scalability
• Serve in an on-call rotation supporting the database infrastructure and respond to production incidents
• Mentor team members
• Generate technical documentation to communicate architectural and design options
• Provide perspective on leading industry trends, recommendations on new and emerging technologies, and engineering process improvements

Requirements

• Experience with cloud services, databases, and datastores such as Amazon RDS, Spanner, CloudSQL, Postgresql and/or MySQL
• Experience with cloud technologies including AWS, or GCP
• Strong scripting experience in multiple languages such as shell, PHP, Python, Golang etc.
• Experience with database architecture, design, replication, clustering, HA/DR
• Experience with automation tools such as Terraform, Puppet, GitHub, and RunDeck
• Experience with modern technologies and container orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker), service deployment, monitoring and scaling
• Demonstrated experience making pragmatic technical choices
• Extensive experience working in large-scale technology environments with teams spanning many locations
• Strong analytical, debugging, and interpersonal skills
• Self-starter, highly motivated and ability to learn quickly
• Excellent team player with strong collaboration, analytical, verbal, and written communication skills
