Staff Engineer II - Senior Data Engineer

About This Role

Provide data engineering expertise to ensure solutions are safe, secure, compliant, and reliable within a centralized team. Lead the design and implementation of integrated data flows, data warehousing, and analytic ecosystems, championing data quality across Western Alliance Bank business lines. Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders to implement solutions based on Azure Cloud data architecture.

Responsibilities

• Provide expertise in technical tools and products within a given domain to ensure solutions are safe, secure, compliant, and reliable
• Identify, develop, and support needs, as well as taking on design responsibilities supporting project tasks
• Facilitate dialogue and activities to ensure team collaboration, including teams outside of the domain
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system configurations and procedures, ensuring compliance with IT policies and industry standards
• Implement data engineering solutions that satisfy the full data lifecycle, including efficient technical hygiene and the use of Azure DevOps
• Develop ETL and data pipeline capabilities considering how data is created, transformed, maintained, stored, archived, analyzed, and shared
• Implement Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines in accordance with Western Alliance Bank technical standards
• Implement data governance and data quality controls in all data solutions according to enterprise standards
• Apply Test Driven Development methodology to all data solution design and implementations
• Lead the implementation of outcomes, recommendations, and designs from Data Governance and Enterprise Architecture
• Actively participate in making data architecture decisions
• Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to understand business requirements and operational processes
• Provide technical mentorship to team members and other data professionals

Requirements

• 7+ years experience with data engineering specifically in ETL concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies
• 2+ years experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud data solutions
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience in data management and/or data analytics
• Expert level experience with at least one RDBMS and query language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Spark SQL
• Experience in conceptual, logical, and physical data design
• Advanced speaking and writing communication skills

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience in data management and/or data analytics.
• 7+ years experience with data engineering specifically in Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies.

• Previous leadership experience
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of general Financial Services or Banking
• Advanced knowledge of applicable regulatory and legal compliance obligations, rules and regulations, industry standards and practices
• Advanced proven experience in leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously
• Additional experience with pipeline development and leveraging Azure DevOps while working on multiple projects simultaneously
• Advanced ability to see the big picture and align projects with organizational goals
• Capable of leading and motivating cross-functional teams
• Expertise in resolving conflicts and addressing challenges as well as skilled at identifying and mitigating risks at the project level
• Proficiency in governance patterns tied to intake, technical reviews and architectural compliance
• Familiarity with data science and analytics tools such as SAS, Tableau, PowerBI
• Familiarity with multi-cloud data management and transformation platforms or tools such as Databricks, Snowflake, Matillion
• Experience in Agile, SAFe, and/or Scrum
• Experience integrating with data quality, data catalog and data lineage tools
• Certifications within Azure such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, Azure Data Scientist, and/or Azure DevOps Engineer
• Banking or financial services industry experience or other highly regulated industry experience
• Experience implementing Large Financial Institution (LFI) Regulatory Reporting data solutions
