Software Engineer II, Backend (Credit Decisioning)

About This Role

This role is for a Software Engineer II on the Credit Decisioning team, focusing on building scalable underwriting decisions for integrated point-of-sale (POS) merchants and wallet platforms. The position involves developing new underwriting features and products to expand Affirm's product offerings and enable sustainable growth, working closely with cross-functional partners to drive significant business impact.

Responsibilities

• Break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery
• Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics
• Participate in ideation, articulate technical constraints, and partner on decisions that properly consider risks and trade-offs
• Support the operations and availability of the team's artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics and escalating when needed
• Support "keep the lights on" & on-call efforts
• Contribute to a sense of community by engaging in growth and development activities such as participation in the interview process

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
• Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems
• Proficient in Python or Kotlin
• Familiarity with building blocks of distributed systems
• Mastered taking a simple problem into a solution that interacts with multiple software components
• Comfortable navigating a large code base and debugging others' code
• Strong verbal and written communication skills

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
• 1.5+ years of experience as a software engineer
