About This Role

Perform hands-on surface analysis of polymeric and biocompatible materials with a focus on surface characterization by ToF-SIMS and AFM within the Microscopy and Surface Science R&D group. This role provides analytical services and support to internal and external customers for Vision and Vision Care products, and contributes to R&D projects throughout product lifecycles.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize polymeric materials using time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to understand surface chemistry, structure, and wetting behavior
  • Interpret complex datasets collected across multiple techniques to provide an understanding of surface properties
  • Develop new approaches to characterize the surface properties of polymeric and biocompatible materials used in contact lenses
  • Analyze materials using techniques including ToF-SIMS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), AFM, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and contact angle measurements
  • Serve as Analytical representative and function as a technical lead for research and development activities within a larger project team
  • Provide Analytical support of manufacturing and operations with problem solving activities

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field with 0-3 years experience OR MS with 5+ years experience
  • Extensive knowledge of ToF-SIMS including data acquisition techniques and analysis methods
  • Experienced with AFM operation and sample preparation
  • Creative and effective problem-solving skills
  • Ability to develop working relationships and project influence across the organization
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or relevant field (or MS with 5+ years experience)
  • 0-3 years experience with PhD or 5+ years experience with MS in medical device or FDA regulated industry

Nice to Have

  • Experience in medical device or FDA regulated industry
  • Experience with principal component analysis (PCA) for ToF-SIMS
  • Experienced with hydrated/immersed sample analysis for AFM
  • Experience with TEM operation and sample preparation (image analysis, microtome cross-sectioning, ion milling, cryogenic techniques)
  • Experience in performing and interpreting interfacial energy and surface energy by contact angle or wettability measurement
  • Experience with chemical characterization of surfaces (XPS, Raman, FTIR)
  • Experience with hydrated room temperature and/or cryogenic sample analysis
