Administer respiratory therapy to patients as prescribed by physicians, including initiating, monitoring, and adjusting mechanical ventilation techniques and various oxygen and breathing devices. Ensure proper functioning and utilization of respiratory therapy equipment and respond to emergency calls.
Responsibilities
- Initiate, monitor, and adjust patients' therapy based on physicians' orders and established guidelines for mechanical ventilation techniques
- Monitor and administer oxygen and breathing devices including cannulas, croupettes, face masks, humidifiers, incentive spirometers, IPPB, oxygen venti masks, nebulizers, and ultrasonic nebulizers
- Identify contraindications and patient responses to treatment, recording treatment and patient response in medical charts
- Transport medical gases to patient floors and specialty areas, setting up appropriate gauges or regulators
- Ensure proper functioning and utilization of Respiratory Therapy equipment by patients
- Respond to emergency calls, taking responsibility for proper resuscitation, assisting with cardiac massage, intubation, and extubation
- Ensure proper restocking of emergency supplies immediately following codes to maintain sufficient supply
- Accompany transport team on inter-hospital transports with patients, performing ventilatory assistance
- Perform nasal and tracheal suctioning and monitor/record PaO2 in infants on transcutaneous oxygen monitors
- Perform basic pulmonary function measurements and studies (ventilator studies, weaning criteria, and related diagnostic studies)
- Assist in disassembling, cleaning, disinfecting, reassembling, and storing equipment; perform routine preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
- Record daily usage of all Respiratory Therapy equipment for department records
- Provide guidance and assistance to new Respiratory Therapy employees and students
- Create individual schedule for daily workload as assigned by supervisor, review and record patient conditions, and report to supervisor/relief personnel
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
- Licensed as Respiratory Therapist in the State of New York
- Basic (or Advanced Cardiovascular) Life Support certification (if hired on/after 05/01/19)
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent and successful completion of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
Certifications
Basic Life Support (BLS)
