OR Nurse Transition to Practice Program (RN)

About This Role

Join Hartford Hospital's comprehensive transition to practice program for novice operating room nurses. This program provides multimodal learning experiences to ensure mastery of necessary competencies for high-quality and safe patient care in the perioperative environment, including roles as Scrub Nurse and Circulating Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a 12-month program divided into two main phases: Introduction to Perioperative Nursing and Clinical Orientation
• Engage in evidence-based learning modules (AORN Periop 101), classroom/group learning, simulation, and clinical experiences
• Master foundational perioperative nurse competencies over the first 4 months of the program
• Complete Periop 101 final exam upon completion of phase one
• Spend 6-7 months immersed in the clinical environment mastering unit-based nursing competencies, mirroring preceptor's schedule
• Work closely with the surgical team to deliver safe, high-quality care before, during, and after surgery
• Ensure patient safety throughout the perioperative environment
• May function as a Scrub Nurse, assisting the surgical team directly within the sterile field by preparing instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies; passing instruments; maintaining a sterile environment; and monitoring instruments.
• May function as a Circulating Nurse, managing the overall environment of the operating room by ensuring all surgical tools, supplies, and equipment are available and working; monitoring patient’s safety and well-being; maintaining documentation; communicating with other departments; and anticipating surgical team needs.

Requirements

• Current Connecticut nursing license required prior to start date
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire

Nice to Have

• Exposure to perioperative nursing practice environment (Summer Student Nurse Fellow, Capstone Rotation, employment in perioperative services in a non-licensed capacity, job/career shadow experience)
