This role involves performing patient care under the direct supervision of a physician or nurse, including preparing patients, administering diagnostic tests, and assisting with various procedures. The Medical Assistant will also coordinate care by organizing and filing reports into medical records.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the health care team in coordinating and implementing patient care plans
- Record reason for visit and related patient information for practitioner review
- Perform vital signs, height, weight, and screening procedures (head circumference, audiometry, vision testing)
- Document findings in the medical record
- Collect and assist providers in collecting specimens using appropriate infection control protocols
- Complete requisitions, label, and route specimens according to standard procedure
- Perform and document daily controls and calibration of laboratory equipment, informing supervisor of inaccuracies
- Perform electrocardiograms and phlebotomy in accordance with provider orders and infection control standards
- Assist physicians and nurses with special procedures and examinations (e.g., lumbar puncture, pelvic exam)
- Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of examination rooms; stock supplies and complete required logs
- Participate in pre-visit chart preparation by ensuring required lab results and documentation are available
- Perform clerical functions such as filing medical records, processing insurance, preparing financial records, and answering phones
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a Medical Assistant training program with certificate OR 1-3 years experience as a medical assistant, emergency medical technician, or certified nursing attendant (with valid certificate) OR Successful completion of the Northwell Health Medical Assistant training program
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent, required
- 1-3 years experience as a medical assistant, emergency medical technician or certified nursing attendant or successful completion of Northwell Health Medical Assistant training program
