The Medical Assistant supports healthcare teams by assisting with clinical and non-clinical patient services. This role involves direct patient interaction, taking vital signs, documenting patient information, and collaborating with healthcare providers to ensure efficient care.
Responsibilities
- Assist junior Medical Assistants with day-to-day questions, responsibilities, and onboarding training.
- Escort patients to examination rooms, prepare equipment, and obtain medical information, vital signs, weight, and height, recording data in medical records.
- Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physician instructions to patients, and organize educational materials.
- Perform general office duties including answering phones, taking dictation, completing insurance forms, and acting as a liaison with other departments.
- Collect, log, and prepare blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens for testing, performing phlebotomy if competent.
- Maintain inventory of immunizations and check expiration dates, providing immunizations where applicable.
- Improve departmental quality initiatives such as ensuring two patient identifiers and hand hygiene.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 1-2 years of direct MA experience or medical field work
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks in complex and busy environments
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Knowledge of medical terminology, procedures, and protocols
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and medical office software
- Ability to take vital signs and manual blood pressure, collect blood samples and other specimens
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required or Associate's Degree Medical Assisting preferred
- 1-2 years of direct Medical Assistant experience or medical field work required
Nice to Have
- Associate's Degree Medical Assisting
- BLS Certification
- Certified Medical Assistant (National Certification)
- Experience administering vaccines (requires certification or 3 years of experience and provider supervision)
