This role involves assisting in patient examination and treatment, including tracking patient information, documenting medical records, assisting with in-office procedures, administering medications, and providing patient education under the guidance of clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Greet and escort patients to examination rooms
- Determine and document the reason for patient visits
- Perform initial response screening following approved protocols and update patient history in the EMR
- Obtain patient vital signs and accurately document information in the EMR, including BMI calculation
- Directly enter medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into the electronic medical record
- Perform diagnostic tests and operate equipment as directed by the healthcare provider
- Perform basic Gaps in Care
- Perform TB testing if credentialed
- Track and inform patients of laboratory/diagnostic test results and communicate provider instructions
- Administer prescribed medications and facilitate prescription renewals
- Perform general specimen collection and assist with other office procedures/surgeries
- Participate in disease management programs under supervision
- Actively work to improve practice performance on Quality incentives
- Provide patient/family education as directed by healthcare provider
- Take and relay accurate, comprehensive, dated, and signed messages in a timely manner
- Serve as liaison between patient and healthcare provider, ensuring timely follow-up
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Successful completion of an accredited/approved MA program and Externship; MA Internship; Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program; Paramedic program; or Certified Athletic Trainer
- Maintain current MA Re-Certification CEUs if credentialed
- MA-Non-Credentialed I: MA eligible to attain Medical Assistant Certification is desired, or EMT with current/active license in the State of Michigan, or Paramedic following successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic Exam and/or holds a current/active license in the State of Michigan
- Valid CPR certification
- MA-Credentialed I: Certification as a Medical Assistant through one of the following certifying agencies: American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA), American Medical Technologists (RMA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA), National Healthcareer Association (CCMA), National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA), American Medical Certification Association (CMAC)
- For those MA I’s working in Workplace Health: DOT Drug Screen Collector, and DOT Breath Alcohol Technician
- Proficient/knowledgeable in medical terminology
- Proficiency in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including electronic medical records, email, e-learning, intranet, and computer navigation
- Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED and successful completion of an accredited/approved MA program and Externship, MA Internship, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, Paramedic program, or Certified Athletic Trainer program.
- 0-1 year previous clinical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred. In absence of completed MA Program/Externship/Internship, must have 2+ years’ clinical experience providing clinical support in community-based clinic.
