About This Role

This Medical Assistant role involves performing a supportive role within the clinical team, ensuring quality patient care and efficient clinic operations for the Allergy & Immunology Clinic at UTHealth Houston's Department of Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Perform responsibilities that promote quality patient care and customer service/satisfaction
  • Participate in planning and preparing for patient visits, ensuring appropriate schedules, test results, and clinic-specific requirements are available
  • Room patients, determining and documenting chief complaint, reason for visit, vital signs, medication list, allergies, smoking history, and other required information
  • Perform appropriate hearing and vision testing, EKG, spirometry, point of care testing, specimen collection, and equipment cleaning/reprocessing as required and competency validated
  • Prepare and stock rooms and clinic supplies, and clean rooms appropriately between patients
  • Prepare for and assist with routine and specialty procedures
  • Schedule patients for follow-up appointments or referrals and perform routine clerical duties
  • Perform telephone messaging and in-person screening with appropriate follow-up
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Respect and maintain privacy and confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines

Requirements

  • Use and care of standard clinic equipment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by AHA
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) by AAMA OR Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) by AMT OR National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) by National Center for Competency Testing OR Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by NHA
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program OR one year of experience in addition to other experience requirements and certification
  • One experience in a healthcare setting

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program OR one year of experience with certification
  • One experience in a healthcare setting required. Three years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
