The Medical Support Specialist (MSS) performs routine medical and testing procedures under the direct supervision of a clinician, playing a crucial role in delivering exceptional patient care and supporting facility operations in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing
- Prepare patients for physical examinations, including taking vital signs, ancillary testing like vaccines, phlebotomy, PFTs, audiogram testing, and respirator fit testing
- Perform rapid screening tests (e.g., influenza, strep, mono, glucose)
- Assist providers during examination and treatment
- Perform routine medical procedures as ordered by clinicians and triage emergent patients
- Prepare and assist clinician with procedure set up and injury care
- Apply bandages, dressings, and splints as ordered by the treating clinician
- Dispense medications and DME according to state regulations
- Complete quality assurance activities on equipment, medical devices, and testing processes
- Maintain supplies, clean rooms and equipment, and stock exam rooms
- Operate and maintain medical devices and equipment, including calibration and record-keeping
- Perform front office duties including greeting patients, obtaining authorization, checking in/out, managing wait times, answering phones, and distributing employer results
- Follow HIPAA guidelines and safety rules
- Attend center staff meetings and complete required clinical competency training
Requirements
- Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited school (credentials in the state of employment)
- At least six months or more of medical assistant experience
- Knowledge of medical procedures and medical terminology
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information (HIPAA and PHI)
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and professional manner
- Teamwork focus
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and data entry into systems
Qualifications
- Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited school or Military Medical Specialist with current Medical Assistant credentials
- At least six months or more of medical assistant experience is customary. Working knowledge of occupational medicine requirements is preferred.
