The Marine Vessel Captain will oversee vessel operations, manage barge movements, and lead the crew, ensuring strict compliance with all U.S. Coast Guard regulations and safety standards. This role is crucial for the safe navigation, operation, and maintenance of towing vessels and barges.
Responsibilities
- Safely navigate towing vessels and ensure adherence to all safety rules
- Manage daily vessel operations, efficiency, maintenance, and upkeep
- Direct and coordinate barge and towing operations in compliance with safety, environmental, and maritime regulations
- Supervise vessel crew performance and ensure safe, efficient operation of vessel and tow
- Enforce company policies and report violations of maritime regulations to Marine Operations leadership
- Oversee routine maintenance and operation of all onboard machinery and equipment
- Manage crew schedules, watch rotations, and training activities
- Ensure licensed wheelmen do not exceed 12 working hours within any 24-hour period
- Report vessel position, barge movements, cargo status, delays, fuel quality, and estimated arrival/departure times
- Maintain accurate Vessel Daily Logs and update every six-hour watch
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5-10 years of experience operating towing vessels and moving barges in the assigned operating area
- Minimum 2 years of experience supervising towboat crews
- Strong working knowledge of local waterways and maritime regulations
- Proficiency with electronic navigation systems and related technologies
- Knowledge of vessel maintenance, cargo handling equipment, and towing operations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and in changing environmental conditions
- Ability to live and work in close quarters for extended periods
- Must meet U.S. Coast Guard medical requirements, including physical examination every five years
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 5-10 years of experience operating towing vessels and moving barges, with a minimum of 2 years supervising towboat crews.
