Laboratory Assistant - Histology

About This Role

Assist laboratory staff with the daily operations of the histology lab, providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support. This role involves specimen processing, instrument maintenance, and communication with providers, contributing to efficient pathology department function.

Responsibilities

• Assist lab staff with day-to-day operation of the laboratory, providing clinical, clerical, and inventory management support.
• Manage specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, transport, and placing samples on automated test platforms.
• Order and receive inventory, ensuring proper receipt and storage of laboratory materials according to NYU policy and regulatory guidelines.
• Perform instrument maintenance and communicate with providers and other laboratories.
• Assist the Pathology Department with daily maintenance, receipt of bodies, hand-off to appropriate individuals, record keeping, and upkeep of the morgue.
• Remove and dispose of all department-regulated medical, biological, chemical, and clean waste.
• Clean all laboratory work surfaces and assigned equipment in accordance with laboratory protocols and proper documentation.
• Maintain logs associated with temperature and humidity for assigned equipment, work areas, and eye wash stations.
• Review routine and stat pending lists, and retrieve missed tests/specimens.
• Answer phones and provide assistance to callers regarding specimen requirements, test availability, and turnaround times.
• Access automated test platforms to assess the status of test samples.
• Help with shipping blood and body fluids to other sites.
• Support inventory management of blood products, including receiving, stocking, and expiration tracking.

Requirements

• High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry
• Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid
• Knowledge of computer applications, especially Excel and Word
• Excellent communication skills

Qualifications

• High School Degree with 12 college credits in biology or chemistry
• Laboratory experience including handling open containers of blood and body fluid (accessioning/intake not included). 1+ years experience in a laboratory setting as a laboratory assistant preferred.
