Historic Garden Intern

About This Role

The Historic Garden Intern will gain valuable experience in landscape maintenance, plant identification, and soil management, working in various locations across the Estate and contributing to the upkeep of Biltmore's historic gardens.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic ground maintenance duties including general cleanup, trash removal, weeding, mowing, hauling, and chipping brush
• Assist in basic gardening duties like preparing beds, installing plants, maintaining planted areas by cultivation, weeding, watering, limited pest control, mulching, and staking
• Recognize significant woody and herbaceous plants in the work area by their common name
• Recognize plant problems and bring them to the attention of the Supervisor
• Work reliably as scheduled, including weekends, emergency duty, and overtime as required
• Operate basic grounds equipment safely after appropriate training
• Safely and efficiently operate various hand tools including shovels, rakes, hoes, and hand saws
• Assist in the application of fertilizers and/or pesticides as required, with supervision
• Use proper watering techniques

Requirements

• Currently enrolled in a college program receiving credit for the internship
• High School Diploma
• Capable of working independently and as a team member
• Valid driver's license
• At least 19 years of age
• Ability to lift 50 lbs

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a college program and receiving credit for the internship
• Prior experience in horticulture or related field is a plus, but primarily focused on learning during internship.
