The HIM Release of Information Specialist I processes basic requests for patient medical information, ensuring accuracy, compliance with HIPAA regulations, and providing excellent customer service. This role safeguards patient privacy by verifying authorization and releasing information only to authorized individuals.
Responsibilities
- Ensures, safeguards, and protects patient privacy by staying current on all Federal and State Regulations and organization policies regarding privacy, confidentiality, and release of information.
- Receives requests, validates that the authorization meets legal requirements, and identifies requester type.
- Logs requests into the Release of Information tracking system utilizing OnBase and EPIC and scans authorization into the release module.
- Identifies and accurately selects appropriate patient information included within the legal health record to process the request and comply with regulations.
- Locates and ensures any information imported or scanned into the EHR that is not available via the release module is included in the request.
- Reviews each page of scanned documentation prior to releasing to ensure no incorrect patient documents are in the record.
- Releases records in the requested format, creating electronic files to export to CD’s, e-mail, the patient portal, or requester portals.
- Provides excellent customer service, ensuring understanding of customer requests and assisting them appropriately.
- Performs clerical functions which may include answering phones, copying, faxing, distributing mail, and/or ordering/delivering supplies.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- 0-1 years of experience in healthcare or customer service
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills
- Strong ethical skills to handle confidential information with integrity
- Strong research skills to identify appropriate PHI
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills
- Ability to adapt to and accurately work with new technology and artificial intelligence
- Strong understanding of cyber security risks
- Advanced computer skills including proficient keyboarding skills and Microsoft Office products
- Ability to read and comprehend medical terminology, human anatomy, disease processes, and HIPAA regulations
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and make decisions with good judgement
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, and work under pressure
- High attention to detail and accuracy
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- 0-1 years of experience in healthcare or customer service.
Nice to Have
- Experience in customer service, release of information, health information management, or healthcare billing
