Freight Handler

About This Role

This role involves transporting freight across the dock area, loading and unloading trailers using motorized and manual equipment. It requires verification of documentation, securing freight, and handling damaged goods in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Transport freight across dock area to/from trailers for loading to trailers
• Perform freight handling using appropriate motorized and manual equipment (forklift, pallet jack, hand truck)
• Verify documentation matches freight description (type, weight, hazardous materials)
• Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies (pallets, straps, rope)
• Recoup/repair damaged freight when necessary
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports
• Assist customers with freight and freight documentation as needed
• Perform hostling duties if required
• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations and company policies/procedures

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Ability to count and perform basic math
• Basic written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to lift/carry hand freight of varying weights several times a week
• Ability to lift dock plates weighing approximately 100 pounds
• Ability to open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force
• Ability to bend, twist, squat, pushing/pulling freight throughout shift
• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, preferred
• Prior experience in warehousing, freight handling and/or fork lift operations preferred

Nice to Have

• Prior experience in warehousing, freight handling and/or fork lift operations
• Experience with hostler/yard mule duties
• Previous dock/warehouse experience
