The Financial Counselor will support patients and internal teams within a compliance-driven healthcare environment by helping patients navigate financial challenges and determine eligibility for assistance programs. This role ensures timely updates to patient accounts, secures payment sources, and supports the organization in maintaining financial stability and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Review and monitor Financial Counselor work queues to ensure timely completion of initial patient financial activities.
- Address account balances for self-pay patients by securing payment sources or identifying subsidy and assistance programs.
- Update patient accounting systems per established policies and procedures, ensuring accurate documentation of all activities.
- Counsel patients through the application and eligibility steps for Medicaid, Insurance Exchange options, and other financial assistance resources.
- Assist patients with Financial Assistance applications in alignment with Froedtert Health, Community Physicians, and MCW policies.
- Collect patient deposits and provide accurate cost estimates based on ability to pay and urgency of medical need.
- Communicate with Social Services, Case Management, Registration, physicians, and other departments to resolve patient financial barriers.
- Confirm required documents, insurance verification, and pre-certifications are completed in accordance with compliance standards.
- Cross-train and provide backup coverage for other Financial Counselor roles, including evening, weekend, or holiday rotations.
- Support patients during open enrollment to apply for Qualified Health Plans (QHP) or affordability programs.
- Adhere to document retention, destruction, state/federal regulations, and Certified Application Counselor guidelines.
- Stay current on policy updates and regulatory changes impacting patient financial counseling.
Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience in healthcare revenue cycle, business office functions, case management, or social work.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and balance patient needs with organizational requirements.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and related software.
- Ability to learn and utilize internal systems, including Epic.
