Equipment Operator

About This Role

This role is responsible for skillfully operating light to heavy equipment for excavation, loading, transferring, and moving materials during the maintenance or construction of public properties. The Equipment Operator will ensure the upkeep of parks, streets, and other public facilities within the City of San Antonio.

Responsibilities

• Operate 10 cubic yard or less dump trucks for transport to and from work locations and construction sites
• Operate various road construction equipment including skid loaders, flat wheel rollers, pneumatic rollers, sweepers, and oil distributors
• Perform minor maintenance and service checks on assigned equipment
• Conduct unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks related to maintenance and construction activities, such as pothole and street repair
• Clean and remove debris from streets, drainage, and ditches, frequently lifting materials up to 50 pounds
• Remove brush and trash from drainage inlets
• Transport tools and equipment to and from work sites
• Assist in the placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones

Requirements

• Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
• One year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment OR completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program
• Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment
• Knowledge of operating characteristics and limitations of equipment being operated
• Knowledge of basic construction methods and practices
• Knowledge of safety procedures related to equipment operation
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and practices
• Ability to learn proper equipment operating procedures, methods, and practices
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
• Ability to understand and follow instructions
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
• Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position

Qualifications

• Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
• One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program.

Nice to Have

• Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial Driver's License
• Three (3) + years' experience in all aspects of street construction / reconstruction
• Three (3) + years' experience with hot and/or cold mix asphalt placement
• Three (3) + years' experience repairing potholes with patch truck
• Three (3) + years' experience operating medium to heavy equipment (i.e. front-end loader, skid loader, double drum roller, pneumatic roller)
