EPIC Counselor

About This Role

The EPIC Counselor is responsible for providing recreation leadership at a summer program designed for special needs children, focusing on their safety, planning activities, and providing supervision. This role involves active participation in games and activities, as well as clear communication with children, parents, and the public.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safety of a group of high-functioning special needs children (ages 8-15)
• Plan and lead daily recreational activities including arts, crafts, drama, music, and sports
• Supervise daily onsite activities and off-site field trips
• Communicate clearly with special needs children, their parents, and the public
• Work with an Inclusive Support Leader to provide accommodations for children's participation
• Intervene in and manage negative behavior, reinforcing positive actions
• Learn individual camper needs and follow provided care plans (from parents, guardians, schools, or Inclusive Support Leader)
• Actively participate in games and activities with campers
• Lift and carry equipment or campers up to 50 pounds, pull and push heavy items

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Experience with teaching/coaching/leading group activities
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
• Ability to control a room and communicate clearly to a group of children
• Ability to identify a child's needs and take corrective action
• Ability to engage children in activities and promote a positive experience

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Experience with teaching/coaching/leading group activities. Experienced with special needs instruction preferred. Experienced with summer day camp programs preferred.

Nice to Have

• Valid CPR certificate
• Valid First Aid certificate
