The Engineering Technician position at the Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department involves performing complex technical assignments in engineering, using judgment and decision-making for technical matters, and applying knowledge of civil engineering theory. This role requires expertise in design, inspection, and construction of public works projects, often involving high public contact.
Responsibilities
- Prepare plans and/or specifications for routine maintenance or construction projects
- Assist in the design of more complex projects
- Serve as resident engineer on minor projects or assistant resident engineer on more complex projects
- Serve as encroachment or grading inspector
- Conduct assigned phases of the traffic engineering program (correctional analysis, classification studies, record maintenance)
- Perform project alternative feasibility analysis
- Perform difficult, complex engineering calculations
- Maintain engineering records and provide information and assistance to the public
- Prepare work orders and coordinate budgeting activities (may be required)
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, techniques and equipment used in field and office engineering work, inspection of public works projects and survey work
- Thorough knowledge of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry
- Thorough knowledge of Drafting techniques (manually and Computer Aided)
- Ability to perform a full range of engineering calculations
- Ability to operate drafting, surveying and other engineering equipment
- Ability to evaluate and draw logical conclusions from data
- Ability to read and interpret maps, deeds, legal descriptions, survey notes and engineering manuals
- Ability to operate computer equipment for input, retrieval analysis of data
- Ability to prepare engineering reports, keep records and prepare survey notes
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to assign and check the work of others
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative work relationships
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency
Qualifications
- Approximately two years of experience performing duties equivalent to those of an Engineering Aide III in Monterey County
Nice to Have
- Working knowledge of computers and application software for CAD, automated record keeping, report preparation, or service charge computations
- Thorough knowledge of third party Civil Engineering Software
- Thorough knowledge of California Coordinate System
- Some knowledge of the principles, techniques and theories used in the design, inspection and construction of roads, bridges and related public works structures
- Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate
