Clinical Dietitians coordinate nutritional care for Veterans, collaborating with other healthcare providers, Veterans, and caregivers to interpret research and utilize whole health principles for patient-centered goals. They aim to improve outcomes and enhance the Veterans' dining experience by working with the Food Operations Section.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate nutritional care of Veterans with other health care providers, the Veteran, the Veteran's caregiver, and the community.
- Interpret research and utilize whole health principles to develop patient-centered goals and improve outcomes.
- Collaborate with the Food Operations Section to enhance the Veterans' dining experience and ensure patient satisfaction.
- Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments using the Nutritional Care Process (NCP) to establish a nutrition diagnosis and determine risk and/or degree of malnutrition.
- Develop and implement Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluating and monitoring effectiveness and outcomes.
- Calculate nutrient requirements and necessary diet restrictions or food and drug interactions, tailoring diet prescriptions to individual patients.
- Document MNT in the medical record using the ADIME format and maintain accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities.
- Identify patients in need of nutritional support, recommend appropriate modes of support, and communicate with the health care team.
- Assess educational needs and provide nutrition education/counseling for individuals and groups, tailored to Veterans.
- Participate in formal and informal interdisciplinary team meetings and lead activities in the implementation of new initiatives.
Requirements
- United States Citizenship
- Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
- Bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent with ACEND evaluation
- Completion of an ACEND accredited experiential or supervised practice program and verification statement for RDN eligibility
- At least 1 year of experience as an RDN/RD equivalent to the GS-09 level for GS-11 position
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent, with an ACEND accredited experiential or supervised practice program.
- At least 1 year of experience as an RDN/RD equivalent to the GS-09 level.
