About This Role

This professional laboratory position is responsible for testing and monitoring newborn screening filter paper blood specimens to detect infants at risk for various metabolic and genetic disorders, ensuring accurate and confirmed results.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and perform tests on newborn screening filter paper blood specimens to detect Amino Acidemias, Fatty Oxidation Disorders, Organic Acidemias, Hemoglobinopathies, and other Endocrine, Genetic and Metabolic Disorders.
  • Initially check and approve test results electronically transmitted to the mainframe computer database.
  • Assure that all positives and borderline results have correct data concerning date of collection, birth weight, type of feeding and transfusion.
  • Perform follow-up testing to confirm results on infants at risk for tested disorders.
  • Maintain quality control data and participate successfully in proficiency testing, taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Perform daily maintenance of instruments and troubleshooting if needed.
  • Delineate blood spots for hand punch, machine punch, and those that are unsatisfactory on a rotating basis.
  • Perform Saturday and emergency work as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic concepts and principles of sciences.
  • Knowledge of procedures, equipment and materials used in laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Skill in the use of laboratory equipment and materials.
  • Ability to understand and follow technical instructions.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Eligible for a Clinical Laboratory Technician License or higher, or, Public Health Technician License or higher.

Qualifications

  • BS in hard Science

Nice to Have

  • Hold a Clinical Laboratory Technician License or higher, or Public Health Technician License or higher.
