About This Role

This Unit Custodian position at the University of Michigan is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation across various areas, including patient care environments. The role involves a wide range of physical tasks and requires a commitment to a clean and safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate vacuum cleaning equipment
  • Clean and polish furniture, cases, fixtures, and furnishings
  • Clean mirrors, inside of exterior glass, and both sides of interior glass
  • Clean toilet rooms and fixtures and stock restroom supplies
  • Dust venetian blinds and spot wash walls
  • Clean patient bedside equipment, make beds, and change linen
  • Change or replace shower or cubical curtains
  • Collect and transport waste materials and soiled linen to central locations
  • Report items in need of repair
  • Sweep, dust mop, and wet mop floors and stairways, including carpeted areas
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies
  • Operate walk-behind and touch-free spray/vacuum cleaning equipment
  • Open or lock buildings or rooms and turn on/off lights and equipment
  • Replace burnt out incandescent light bulbs
  • Move and arrange furniture and furnishings

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activities including pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching
  • No lifting restrictions
  • Ability to work around sick and disabled patients (children and adults) within a hospital setting
  • Ability to work as a team player, prioritize work, and handle stress daily
  • Ability to perform all tasks listed on the Unit Custodian Classification Description

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Entry level with a high school diploma or equivalent experience
