About This Role

The Respiratory Therapy Technician assesses the care needs of patients, performs basic respiratory care techniques and blood gas analysis, and supports the healthcare inpatient team.

Responsibilities

  • Complete training and demonstrate proficiency in all competencies required for patient services
  • Perform basic respiratory care techniques including sputum inductions, medication administration, aerosol, and oxygen therapy
  • Analyze blood gases and electrolytes from arterial/venous samples
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot blood gas analyzers
  • Perform and review quality controls on blood gas analyzers and proficiency testing
  • Document analytical measurements and monitor temperature/humidity in blood gas labs
  • Conduct EKG diagnostic testing and equipment rounds
  • Manage compressed gas cylinders and perform basic ventilatory parameters
  • Provide patient education and assist in performing intra-tracheal aspiration
  • Stock and maintain designated areas with appropriate respiratory care equipment
  • Reprocess moveable equipment/devices, including inlet gaskets
  • Set-up and test equipment such as ventilators, BiPAP, nitric oxide delivery machines and other medical devices
  • Learn new technical devices and clinical procedures
  • Provide report on pertinent observations of patient status to oncoming shift and/or shift supervisor

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), or certification within 30 days of hire
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner
  • Ability to use sound judgment, tact and dependability
  • Excellent organizational, customer service and reading comprehension skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with all levels of hospital personnel
  • Proficiency in information technology skills (including Microsoft Office software, e-mail and calendar); proven record of effectively learning and utilizing computer systems and technology

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Nice to Have

  • Some college level training in a health or science related degree (e.g., Respiratory Therapy Program student), or previous work experience in a similar position
  • Knowledge of all basic respiratory care techniques
  • Active membership in the AARC and MSRC
  • ACLS
