About This Role

The Undergraduate Academic Advisor fosters student success by identifying and implementing proactive strategies to help students achieve their educational goals. They advise students on university policies, degree requirements, academic matters, and provide specialized TRIO support services to eligible students.

Responsibilities

  • Foster student success by identifying and implementing proactive strategies to fulfill educational goals
  • Advise students on university policy, procedures, program, and degree requirements
  • Assist in student orientation and teach student survey/orientation courses
  • Identify new resources and collaborations for resolving student cases
  • Direct students to appropriate resources
  • Provide and document one-on-one advising to undergraduate students regarding degree and program options
  • Review and process add/drops, place/remove academic holds, and maintain advising records
  • Initiate, lead, or complete simple to moderate special projects within the unit or with external partners
  • Update course materials and recommend course improvements for university survey courses
  • Coordinate advising activities and enhance orientation materials

Requirements

  • Master's Level Degree or 2+ years equivalent experience
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a manner that adapts to student needs
  • Ability to articulate specific information on course content, programs, and policies to diverse audiences
  • Effectively build relationships with students and possess adaptive relational skills
  • Demonstrate advanced communication skills
  • Demonstrate and apply historical knowledge of the academic advising profession
  • Ability to apply theory to advising practice and follow FERPA guidelines
  • Ability to tailor advising interactions to accommodate or incorporate student’s individual needs
  • Ability to assess a student’s potential for success in a field of study and make appropriate referrals

Qualifications

  • Master's Level Degree (higher-education preferred) or 2+ years of equivalent experience
  • 0 years experience needed with a Master's degree; 2+ years of equivalent experience otherwise. 3-6 years experience preferred.

Nice to Have

  • 3-6 years experience
  • Knowledge of student and university requirements and policies
  • Ability to perform basic and advanced transactions in OnCourse and university/grant systems
  • Broad knowledge of course offerings, including General Education requirements, major courses, and course sequencing
  • Understanding needs of students from wide variety of backgrounds, needs of students eligible for TRIO services, and changing trends of students’ needs
  • Basic knowledge of student career development and ability to refer to appropriate engagement resources
