This Telecommunications Lineworker 1 role is responsible for installing, maintaining, and transferring overhead telecommunications infrastructure, working closely with a senior lineworker to develop technical and operational skills. This position involves safely working at heights, operating various tools and equipment, and interpreting technical documents to support the expansion and maintenance of telecommunications networks.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with a senior lineworker to understand technical and operational responsibilities in telecommunications line work.
- Install, maintain, and transfer overhead telecommunications infrastructure, including cables, wires, and equipment on utility poles and aerial spans.
- Inspect and test utility poles for foreign voltage and integrity using pole prod and sound test methods.
- Operate various tools and equipment safely, including bucket trucks, hand tools, power tools, ladders, signal level meters, voltmeters, and specialized test equipment.
- Safely climb and top utility poles using gaffs and other climbing gear, working at heights of 20 plus feet.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering work orders, and other technical documents to guide installation and repairs.
- Complete weekly as-built blueprints and utilize technology like iPads, cameras, and GIS software for data collection.
- Adhere to industry standards and regulations, including NESC codes, and identify violations.
- Set up and clean up job sites, ensuring equipment is safely loaded, secured, transported, and unloaded.
- Perform restoration work on the site after project completion and conduct regular equipment inspections.
Requirements
- One year of experience in fiber construction or successful completion of a telecommunications lineworker training program
- Basic knowledge of the telecommunications industry and fiber optics, including standard practices and industry best methods
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Clean Motor Vehicle Report and pass the Davey Driver’s Safety Course
- Comfortable climbing utility poles and working at heights of 20 plus feet
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card by completing a DOT physical examination and passing a drug test
- Ability to use electronic devices and technological tools in the field, including iPads, cameras, and GIS software, and use maps and navigation tools
- Effectively and clearly communicate in a one-on-one or group setting
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions while operating safely, accurately and efficiently
- Willingness to obtain and maintain professional certificates and licenses commensurate with project requirements
Qualifications
- One year of experience in fiber construction or successful completion of a telecommunications lineworker training program.
Nice to Have
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- CDL Class A driver's license
- Electric hazard identification, electric equipment identification, or communication equipment identification capability
- OSHA 1910.268 qualified training
