The System Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides overall leadership and operational management for systemwide clinical functions at Beth Israel Lahey Health, focusing on clinical excellence, quality, safety, and patient experience. This role involves developing foundational strategies and implementing evidence-based programs to improve clinical performance and outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement foundational strategy and change management to balance growth and sustainability with clinical excellence, quality, safety, and service, reducing variation in patient care.
- Direct and implement evidence-based programs, practices, and activities for continuous improvements in clinical performance and outcomes.
- Complete ongoing integration of medical staff functions, bylaws, and processes to drive efficiency, data integrity, and operational discipline.
- Work collaboratively across the enterprise and externally to enhance clinical operations and experience.
- Strengthen and reinforce a culture of clinical excellence and value across BILH.
- Build and lead an integrated, multi-disciplinary clinical improvement organization.
- Create an environment that fosters innovation and performance, supporting programs that continuously advance clinical outcomes and patient experience.
- Ensure BILH rapidly advances as a leader in clinical excellence and patient experience nationally.
- Establish clinical performance measurements for internal use and assure reporting to all required external entities.
- Lead in developing, directing, and coordinating innovative, multidisciplinary clinical performance and outcomes management initiatives.
- Oversee performance analytics, understand trends, and direct the monitoring, reporting, and active discussion of clinical outcomes.
- Ensure BILH is a learning organization by incorporating LEAN and Six Sigma methodologies.
- Lead various system-wide committees, councils, task forces, work groups, and focus groups.
- Perform all duties inherent to a senior-level managerial role, including hiring, training, evaluation, and termination of assigned staff.
- Serve as a spokesperson for BILH related to clinical performance and medical staff issues with national organizations.
Requirements
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent degree
- Board certification
- Bachelor's degree in health-related field
- 15 years of progressive leadership experience
- 10 years of experience leading clinical performance and improvement programs within a large, complex academic medical center or integrated delivery system
- Oversight for both inpatient and outpatient settings
- Licensed or eligible for license to practice medicine in Massachusetts
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent degree and board certification; Bachelor's degree in health-related field.
- 15 years of progressive leadership experience, including at least 10 years leading clinical performance and improvement programs within a large, complex academic medical center or integrated delivery system with oversight for both inpatient and outpatient settings.

- Experience in an academic setting with a national reputation and a track record of scholarship related to quality and safety
- Proven experience in establishing strategic priorities and building infrastructure for large-scale initiatives and behavioral change
- Experience utilizing process improvement approaches and methods
