About This Role

The Steward is responsible for the year-round upkeep and maintenance of properties in The Trustees' Southeast Region, performing routine and project-based work on fields, trails, lawns, buildings, and equipment. This role identifies and executes property-specific stewardship needs under the direction of the Stewardship Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Perform landscape maintenance including mowing, trimming, brush cutting, snow removal, irrigation, plant health care, tree work, trail maintenance, and invasive vegetation management.
  • Perform routine maintenance of structures including custodial, painting, light carpentry, and plumbing.
  • Safely and efficiently operate and maintain tractors, UTV's, mowers, F350 dump trucks, and 22ft trailers.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment to the highest standards.
  • Provide positive oversight and recognition of volunteer efforts in the field.
  • Support the goals of the Annual Stewardship plan and completion of deferred maintenance projects.
  • Professionally represent the organization as a public-facing presence at all properties.
  • Maintain positive and productive relationships with members, neighbors, visitors, and other Trustees staff.
  • Work with the Stewardship Manager to identify meaningful volunteer and internship opportunities.
  • Assist with projects on other Trustees properties and lead seasonal staff.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in property maintenance, landscaping, or related field OR an Associate's degree in a natural resource field.
  • Ability to safely operate, repair and maintain chainsaws, trimmers, brush cutters, mowers and associated landscaping equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons, sometimes during inclement weather.
  • Ability to be available during snowstorms for snow removal.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs, pull and push heavy items, hike and carry equipment, and climb stairs and ladders.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Satisfactory criminal background (CORI) check.
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Park Management, Horticulture, Forestry, Ecology or another natural resource field.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in property maintenance, landscaping, facilities management, a building trade, mechanics, or other related experience.

Nice to Have

  • Mid-level carpentry and painting skills.
  • Experience maintaining cultural/historic landscapes.
  • Formal landscape maintenance and related experience.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting License Class 2A.
  • Massachusetts Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.
  • DOT Medical Card.
  • OSHA 10 Hour General Industry.
  • Wilderness First Aid.
