About This Role

The Steve & Kate's Traveling Camp Director is responsible for leading and managing all facets of various camp and childcare programs across the country, filling in when directors are absent and overseeing logistics, compliance, and team management. This role ensures the creation of a dynamic and inclusive environment for campers, staff, and families while maintaining operational efficiency and profitability.

Responsibilities

  • Support the employee life cycle for seasonal teams, including attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and separation.
  • Act as temporary manager for day camps (7-12 weeks, 20-250 campers daily), break programs, and pop-up childcare events.
  • Handle crisis, emergency, behavioral, and medical responses during camp or childcare settings.
  • Manage all customer contact, including email/phone inquiries, providing exceptional service, and handling sensitive matters for families.
  • Manage compliance processes and ensure implementation of company, city, and state policies for camps and childcare facilities.
  • Ensure program adherence to a six-figure budget for personnel, food, and programming.
  • Oversee inventory management of hundreds of items valued in excess of six-figures for camp programs.
  • Maintain positive relationships with host schools, ensuring sanitary, safe, and smooth operations.

Requirements

  • 25 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two prior seasons of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp or summer program working with children
  • Past management or leadership experience
  • Experience hiring and managing teams of 5 or more
  • Understanding of required quality camp standards
  • Knowledge and ability to lead staff in implementation of developmentally appropriate program
  • Experience and skill in communication, leadership, organization, and supervision
  • Sensitivity and responsiveness to needs of families, staff, and client/hosts
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities in all levels of direct care
  • Working knowledge and management of business operations and financial performance proficiency
  • Proficiency with technology platforms for business operations (HRIS, timekeeping, enrollment tracking, billing)
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Experience working in an inclusive work environment and managing across differences
  • Ability to be on-site during assigned camp programs and conduct planning work from home when not in session
  • Capability for physically demanding on-site management, including extended periods on feet, outdoors, and occasional physical exertion

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required, Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • At least two prior seasons of administrative or supervisory experience in an organized camp or in a summer program working with children; past management or leadership experience is required.
