About This Role

This Senior Mechanical Engineer role at Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation team involves designing and implementing scalable infrastructure for cloud services, focusing on hardware engineering aspects with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Create robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and verification plans for hardware engineering aspects of complex products or feature areas
  • Develop and implement solutions to complex technical and design challenges, applying lessons learned to future solutions
  • Interpret device specification sheets to design and test various hardware features, including secure defaults and security compliance metrics in specifications
  • Acquire advanced knowledge of industry trends, competitor products, and advances in engineering fields, and share expertise with team members
  • Participate in creating intellectual property, potentially filing patents and conducting technical due diligence while adhering to security guidelines
  • Specify dimensions and measurement requirements for statistical analyses to evaluate product cost and quality, advising on recommended measurement tools
  • Provide make-versus-buy recommendations to management based on complexity, financial impact, quality, reliability, and time duration
  • Develop drawings for complex new products or features using modeling tools and guide other engineers on fundamental features
  • Identify partners or suppliers using established criteria, including adherence to security governance, and collaborate via workshops and presentations
  • Apply expertise in predictive modeling techniques to inform design choices and assess/minimize security risks for products
  • Research and identify new tools, technologies, or processes for project implementation to improve product quality, security, performance, and reliability
  • Resolve design issues, identify recurring issues, and recommend design changes and tradeoffs for multiple products
  • Generate project implementation schedules, monitor performance, and determine resource dependencies, guiding other team members
  • Evaluate and approve details of materials, properties, and techniques for reliability in large designs
  • Implement and track product plans, accounting for user experience, testing scenarios, identifying critical requirements, and verifying secure operations

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting chiller plant systems, including knowledge of HVAC principles, mechanical components, and safety protocols
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years related technical engineering experience with a Master's degree, or 4+ years with a Bachelor's degree. 3+ years of hands-on experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting chiller plant systems.

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience
