About This Role

Serve as a Staff Speech-Language Pathologist within the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service, providing diagnostic and treatment services for inpatients, outpatients, and Community Living Center patients. The role involves independent clinical judgment applying a wide range of speech-language pathology theories and methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, diagnose, and provide speech/language/cognitive retraining therapy for inpatients, outpatients, and Community Living Center patients
  • Apply wide range of theories, principles, and methodologies in speech-language pathology
  • Develop coherent treatment strategies
  • Incorporate new clinical procedures to perform services independently
  • Conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions, and consult with other healthcare professionals
  • Utilize knowledge of speech-language pathology instrumentation
  • Apply principles and techniques in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders
  • Apply principles and techniques in voice disorders, including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients
  • Exercise independent clinical judgment and adapt procedures to age-specific and unique patient conditions
  • Consult with physicians and other healthcare practitioners on diagnostic evaluation and treatment
  • Document evaluates, diagnosis, clinical opinion, treatment plans, outcomes, and patient/family education in medical records
  • Attend interdisciplinary team meetings and advise on diagnosis and treatment
  • Provide orientation/training of medical staff and assist in training new staff, students, trainees, and fellows
  • Stay current with theory and practice through continuing education
  • Provide patient and family education including informed consent
  • Participate in developing guidelines and protocols, new patient programs, and evaluation of existing programs
  • Maintain patient records and other required data
  • Maintain supplies, equipment, and clinical areas for safety and efficiency
  • May serve on service-level committees or task forces

Requirements

  • United States Citizenship
  • Full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
  • Master's degree or equivalent in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field
  • 1 year of creditable experience (or doctoral degree)
  • Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies
  • Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures sufficient to perform clinical services independently
  • Ability to conduct assessments, provide treatment interventions, and provide consultation to other health care professionals
  • Knowledge of instrumentation used in speech-language pathology
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems, diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia, and cognitive-communication disorders
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in voice disorders including alaryngeal and trach/ventilator-dependent patients
  • Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary speech-language pathology practice

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field, or a doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field
  • 1 year of professional experience comparable to the GS-11 level, in addition to basic requirements
