About This Role

Provide state-of-the-art animal care for laboratory animals, primarily rodents, within Princeton University's Laboratory Animal Resource facilities. This role involves animal husbandry, maintaining cleanliness, and assisting with facility management.

Responsibilities

  • Provide animal care for various laboratory species (rodents, aquatics, USDA-covered species), primarily rodents, according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensure cleanliness of the facility and adequate supplies of food, bedding materials, and PPE
  • Rotate through all LAR facilities and work with co-workers according to a schedule
  • Monitor, document, and report deviations from normal environmental parameters and facility maintenance issues
  • Provide species-specific environmental enrichment for laboratory animals under Veterinary Services direction
  • Monitor animal health and welfare daily, reporting sick and dead animals to researchers and Veterinary Services
  • Receive and maintain adequate inventory levels of cleaning materials, PPE supplies, bedding, food, and dietary supplements
  • Prepare for and receive new animal shipments, entering data into electronic management software
  • Collect facility-wide animal census and accurately enter data into various systems
  • Assist with transgenic rodent breeding colony management, including tissue sample collection, mating setup, weaning, and data tracking
  • Cross-train and provide absentee support for other animal care technicians in other facilities
  • Rotate for weeknight, weekend, and holiday coverage as needed

Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to work safely with biological and chemical hazards
  • Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs
  • Basic knowledge of biology and behavior of laboratory animal species, including non-human primates
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a laboratory animal resources team
  • Ability to share husbandry knowledge with other animal care staff, students, and new researchers
  • Proven ability to work independently and communicate well with different levels within the organization
  • Proficient knowledge of federal, state, and local Animal Welfare legislation

Qualifications

  • 1-3 years minimum of full-time work experience as an Animal Care Technician.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills (person-to-person and email)
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Applications (including Outlook) and other software in animal research and compliance
  • Ability to follow-up tasks from beginning to completion and meet deadlines
  • Ability to preserve confidential information
